The Pittsburgh Pirates converted a terrific effort from starter Luis Fernández into a win over the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park. The Pirates won the game by a final score of 4-2. Fernández, now 3-0, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 7, walking 0, and allowing 2 runs. The win gives Pittsburgh a record of 17-14.

Chris Riley had a big 2-run home run for the Pirates in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Pittsburgh leading 2-1 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a cutter from Jim Rose, who is tied for 7th in the NL with a 0.97 WHIP, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Pirates on top, 4-1.
