Staten Island second baseman Dan Smith helped his team beat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 7-6. Smith, who is tied for 10th in the NYP in runs scored with 25, went 4 for 5 for the Yankees. Joe Ward, who is tied for 7th in the NYP in strikeouts with 45, was the winning pitcher. Over 5 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts. The Crosscutters had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Yankees going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 21-year old left fielder Jorge Cantú came to the plate. Cantú hit a 2-run home run on a 2-2 circle change from Williamsport hurler Jorge Jiménez. It was Cantú's 5th home run of the year.

"I'm proud of the way we took care of business and got the 'W' today," Smith told the Staten Island Chronicle. "Whatever it takes."
