Staten Island beat Williamsport on the strength of starting pitcher Xavier García's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 9-3. García got the win, improving to 5-6. He gave up 8 hits and walked 4 over 7 innings. He allowed 3 runs. With this game in the books, Staten Island is 34-39, Williamsport 30-43.
Staten Island used a well-timed hit by Joe Phipps to capture the win. The left fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Yankees ahead, 3-1. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.
"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Williamsport manager . "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."
