The Atlanta Hammers had their hands full with Chicago Cubs starter Mariano Ortega, who frustrated Atlanta hitters while leading Chicago to a comfortable, 6-1 win. Chicago reliever Tyler Matzek picked up the win, upping his record to 2-2. Dan Hicks took the loss. The 4th-place Hammers dropped to 19-24.
Dan Williams drove in one run for Chicago. With one out and the game tied in the top of the ninth inning, Williams, who finished 5th in the NL in triples with 8 in 2024, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Atlanta hurler Dan Hicks, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead.
"I thought we played a nice game," Williams told the Chicago Observer. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
