Pirates Suffer 13-1 Drubbing
The Philadelphia Phillies got production up and down the lineup while beating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 13-1. One standout was third baseman Maikel Franco. Franco, who led the NL in batting average with .340 last year, hit 3 home runs. He scored 4 times and drove in 3. Ron Ross, the winning pitcher, improved to 6-4. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 run, while striking out 5 and walking 2. The Phillies have an impressive 30-15 record.

The Phillies got a big hit from designated hitter Greg Bird. Facing Pittsburgh pitcher Erick Fedde in the bottom of the eighth, Bird pounded a grand slam home run to center. His 7th home run of the season put the Phillies ahead, 13-1.

"That game had disaster written all over it," said Pittsburgh skipper Jose Mijares. "I could feel it."
