Atlanta pitcher Mike Whiteford had a large part in his team beating the Boston Red Sox, 8-1. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. Bobby Moore earned the save, his 1st, for the Hammers. The loss makes Boston 22-25.

Atlanta right fielder Luis Herta contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the fourth. With two down, he hit a curveball to left-center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 42nd hit of the season and put the Hammers ahead, 3-1.

"We need to string a few more wins like this one together," said Herta.
