Washington Beaten, 7-2, by Atlanta
|
The Atlanta Firebirds knocked off the Washington Nationals, 7-2, in National League action at Nationals Park. Atlanta pitcher and Brooklyn, New York, native Oscar Willis had an outstanding performance. Carlos A. Lopez, now 2-2, was credited with the win in 3.1 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 2 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 0. Atlanta is now 22-28, while Washington is 27-23.
Gleyber Torres went 1-4 with a triple for Atlanta. The 28-year old third baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the eighth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 2-2 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Dominic Bingham. It was his 15th RBI of the season.
Said losing manager Mark Grudzielanek: "It's very easy to sit in an ivory tower and critique the pitching, but the bottom line is we need to score runs."
