Seattle Sent Home with 5-3 Loss
|
The Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners, 5-3, at Minute Maid Park. The Astros got a fine performance from left fielder Ed Simmons, who went 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs. Mike Cunningham, the winner, improved to 2-7. He held Seattle to 3 runs on 5 hits over 6 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts. Houston, at 22-32, occupies last place in the American League West Division.
The Mariners had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Astros going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old third baseman Bernard Antonelli came to the plate. Antonelli hit a run-scoring double on a 1-2 slider from Seattle hurler Bobby Hockley. It was Antonelli's 7th double of the year.
"I still have a lot of confidence in this team," Houston manager Mike Napoli said afterward.
