The Tampa Bay Rays weathered a fine game by Boston center fielder Steve Potter to upend the Red Sox, 5-3, at Fenway Park. Potter went 4-4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. The winner was Héctor Saldaña in relief. His record improves to 3-5. Juan Cervantes took the loss. Joe Montgomery, credited with the save, is now 13 for 16 in save opportunities.

Tampa Bay used the timely hitting of Dylan Veeck to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Rays on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

Veeck said his team "executed a good game plan."

By defeating Boston, the 4th-place Rays improved to 31-36.
