Cleveland Upended by Cincinnati, 5-4
|
The Cleveland Guardians could not turn a fine performance from third baseman Ernie Jones into a win. Instead, the Cincinnati Reds prevailed, 5-4. Jones went 2 for 4 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Steven Matz picked up the win, improving his season record to 6-3. He struck out 4 in 5.1 innings. Anthony DeSclafani recorded the save for Cincinnati, his 11th of the season.
Jake Bauers dealt the Guardians a blow in the top of the seventh. Batting with runners on 1st and 2nd and Cincinnati leading 4-1, Bauers hit a 0-2 fastball for a run-scoring single.
Cincinnati manager Julio Vinas called it "a good, solid win."
Cincinnati is now 32-36, Cleveland 26-41.
