Pirates Nudge Past Marlins, 5-4
|
The Pittsburgh Pirates besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Miami designated hitter Edgardo Medina by beating the Marlins, 5-4, at PNC Park. Medina went 2-3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Aaron Sanchez, who finished 5th in the AL in strikeouts with 196 in 2016, was the winner in relief. His record is now 5-0. The losing pitcher was Joe Malone. The win for the Pirates raised their record to 46-25.
Pittsburgh got a knockout punch from Thad Brown. The center fielder hammered a 3-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.
"This place sure got loud," said Jose Mijares, the Pittsburgh manager.
