Mets, Hayes Pin Bad Loss on Hammers
The New York Mets defeated the Atlanta Hammers, 12-0, in National League action at Citi Field. Jim Hayes pulled his weight. The 7-year veteran went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. Juan Mismit, the winner, improved to 4-5. He held the Hammers to no runs on 4 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 2 and walking 2. By defeating Atlanta, the third-place Mets improved to 33-38.

The Mets got a big hit from first baseman Héctor Cabrera. Facing Atlanta pitcher Carlos A. Lopez in the bottom of the sixth, Cabrera pounded a grand slam home run to right-center. His 15th home run of the season put the Mets ahead, 8-0.

"I thought we played a nice game," Cabrera told the New York Daily News. "Good pitching, timely hitting, it was all there."
