The New York Mets took Cincinnati pitcher Chris Sale's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Great American Ball Park. The final score had New York getting past the Reds, 2-1. Sale went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 9. New York pitcher José Ferrer got the win, upping his record to 4-7. Chris Sale got the loss. New York is now 34-40, Cincinnati 38-36.

New York used a well-timed hit by Jim Hayes to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the third inning to put the Mets ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"You have to win 1-0, 3-2, 2-1 games if you want to get to where you want to go," said Mets manager Mike Matheny.
