In a low-scoring contest between the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cam Adkins was the X factor. The Detroit right-hander spearheaded the 2-1 win. The American League Central Division-leading Tigers have a record of 45-31.

Tad Johnson had a big solo home run for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Detroit leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a curveball from Luis Fernández, who led the AL in strikeouts with 204 last year, and punished it. The result was his 8th home run of the season, which put the Tigers on top, 2-0.

"Bottom line," said Pittsburgh skipper Jose Mijares, "we didn't play well enough to win."
