Cubs Score Late to Upend Mets, 4-2
The New York Mets could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Pat Whittier into a win. Instead, the Chicago Cubs prevailed, 4-2. Whittier threw 6.1 innings of 3-hit ball. The Cubs improved their record to 37-44 with the win over New York.

A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the ninth, with the game tied, Ron Hicks was at the plate when Chicago scored 2 on an error. The miscue enabled the Cubs to go in front, 4-2.

Hicks called the win a testament to his team's "tenacity."
