Firebirds Upend Mets, 5-0
|
Atlanta Firebirds pitcher Mike Whiteford was in fine form, leading his team past the New York Mets, 5-0. Whiteford, now 6-4, was the winner. In 8.2 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 6, walking 0, and allowing no runs. Atlanta goes to 34-48, New York to 30-51.
Jorge Gutiérrez had a big bases-clearing triple for the Firebirds in the top of the fourth inning. With Atlanta leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a curveball from fireballing right-hander Pat Whittier and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 7th triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Firebirds ahead, 4-0.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Atlanta manager Barry Larkin. "It's usually not just one thing."
