The New York Mets handed the Washington Nationals a 5-4 defeat at Citi Field. Third Baseman Sam Robbins starred for New York. He went 3-3 with a triple, 2 doubles, and a walk. He scored 2 times. José Ferrer, the winning pitcher, improved to 8-11. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 0. The Mets are now 55-69, while the Nationals fall to 71-54.
The Mets got a big at-bat from left fielder Jim Hayes. For the game, Hayes went 1-3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 13th home run of the season gave New York a 3-2 lead.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Hayes told a New York Daily News reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
