The Miami Marlins topped the Washington Nationals, 8-3, in National League action at Nationals Park. The standout performance belonged to Miami pitcher and Beloit, Wisconsin, native Bob Irvin. Irvin got the win, improving to 9-8. He gave up 6 hits and walked 2 over 5.2 innings. He allowed 2 runs. Joe Malone picked up the save, his 19th.

Miami used the timely hitting of Luis Alvarado to capture the win. The center fielder stroked a 2-run double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Marlins on top, 6-3. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but he made it count.

"Throwing strikes was the main thing," Irvin said.

The Marlins now have a record of 59-76 with the win over Washington.
