The New York Mets topped the San Diego Padres, 5-1, in National League action at Citi Field. The standout performance belonged to New York pitcher and Springfield, Oregon, native P.J. Burton. The setback makes San Diego 72-81.

Jim Hayes, who finished 2nd in the NL in triples with 11 in 2022, took San Diego hurler Ben Burke deep in the bottom of the second. His 2-run home run put the Mets on top, 3-1. In all, Hayes had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 3.

"I can't say enough about P.J.," said New York manager Raul Dominguez. "He stepped up when we needed him."
