Chicago Topples Washington, 6-2
|
The exploits of right fielder Ron Hicks, who finished 2nd in the NL in runs with 105 last year, helped the Chicago Cubs defeat the Washington Nationals, 6-2. Hicks went 1-2 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Mike Adon, 1-0, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2.1 innings. The win puts Chicago at 1-1.
Hicks had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the sixth. On a full count curveball from Kirk Griffith, he banged a 3-run home run to right, giving the Cubs a 4-2 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for Hicks.
Said losing manager Mark Grudzielanek: "Give the Cubs credit. They played a better game than we did."
