Los Angeles beat Cleveland on the strength of starting pitcher Donnie Ellis's fine effort. The left-hander led his team to a win, 5-3. Los Angeles pitcher Bob Vaughn got the win, upping his record to 1-0. Bobby Young got the loss. Cleveland falls to 3-3.

The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Don Jones came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Cleveland pitcher Bobby Young, he hit a 1-2 screwball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Los Angeles on top, 4-3.

"Our guys are never satisfied," said Los Angeles manager Torey Lovullo.
