Pirates Lose By a Run at Cincinnati
The Pittsburgh Pirates could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Luis Fernández into a win. Instead, the Cincinnati Reds prevailed, 8-7. Fernández threw 6.0 innings of 2-hit ball. Getting the save was Dave Parsons, his 4th. The Reds, now 4-2, have been playing some good baseball.

Had Jeff Adams not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Adams hit a 2-run single. That made the score 6-4, in favor of the Reds.

In postgame comments to the Cincinnati Bulletin, Adams said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
