Pérez Big Deal in Baltimore: Hits for Cycle
|
Robinson Pérez did everything he could for the Baltimore Orioles -- literally.
The 30-year-old catcher hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Orioles, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Cincinnati Reds, 6-0, at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Pérez reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Pérez banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 4 runs batted in and 1 run scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Robinson Pérez hit an RBI triple in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Walt Sharpe in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and struck out in the 7th.
For the season, Pérez is hitting .329, batted in 15 runs with 3 home runs and 12 runs scored.
