Luis Fernández, who is tied for 8th in the NL in strikeouts with 31, was locked in. The right-hander led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 win against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. Fernández, the winner, moves to 2-0. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 8 and giving up 1 walk. Joe Kaiser recorded his 6th save for Pittsburgh.

Cristo Avilés came through with a big-time hit for Pittsburgh. The catcher smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to give his team the lead, 3-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"Luis's a gamer," said Pittsburgh manager Jose Mijares. "Glad he's on our side."

Milwaukee, with the loss, is still a robust 19-6.
