Cubs Turn Back Great Lakes, 5-3
|
The South Bend Cubs defeated the Great Lakes Loons, 5-3, at Dow Diamond. Leading the charge for South Bend was left fielder Mario Guerra. He was 4-5 with a double and 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Ed Green went 5.1 innings for South Bend to pick up the win. The right-hander was charged with 2 runs. He scattered 4 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 5. His record improves to 10-12. Mike Tillman earned his 15th save in 19 tries.
With South Bend leading 1-0 in the top of the first, Guerra hit a run-scoring single off Great Lakes hurler Juan Ortíz. It was the 125th hit of the season for Guerra and put his team ahead, 2-0.
After the game, South Bend manager Taylor Davis applauded the team's effort. "We put some good AB's together," he said.
South Bend is now 58-73, Great Lakes 67-64.
