West Michigan Beats Fort Wayne, 9-1
The West Michigan Whitecaps beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps, 9-1, at Fifth Third Ballpark. Starting pitcher Thad Kennedy was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. The winning pitcher was Kennedy, now 5-2. He tossed 5.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 7. Sandy Lowe earned the save for West Michigan, his 1st of the year.

Joe Jacobs had a big 2-run double for the Whitecaps in the bottom of the second inning. With West Michigan leading 1-0 and the bases loaded, he got a cutter from 23-year old right-handed pitcher Ron Whelan and swatted a double to right. It was his 26th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Whitecaps ahead, 3-0.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Kennedy.

West Michigan leads the Eastern Division by 27½ games.
