Washington Tacks 6-3 Loss on Atlanta
|
Eager fans turned out for a matchup between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Hammers.
Esteban Vázquez had a good game, but he could not keep the Atlanta Hammers from falling, 6-3, to the Washington Nationals at SunTrust Park. The Atlanta designated hitter was 3 for 4 with a home run and a double, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 in the loss. Ty Buttrey, the winner, improved to 4-3. He held Atlanta to 2 runs on 6 hits over 6.2 innings, while racking up 6 strikeouts.
Washington used a clutch at-bat from Greg Bird to capture the win. The designated hitter hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Nationals ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
Bird called the win "a lesson in teamwork."
Washington, at 35-19, is 4½ games up in the National League East Division.
