West Michigan Takes Round 1 Game 1, Johnson Stars
The West Michigan Whitecaps started the Round 1 in style, downing the visiting South Bend Cubs at Fifth Third Ballpark by a score of 5-3 to grab an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. Whitecaps first baseman Freddie Johnson was 2 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2.

Tomás Quintana hit a run-scoring triple off Alex Bartelt in the bottom of the fifth, which put the Whitecaps in front, 4-3. Quintana had 1 single, in addition to the triple. For the game, he went 2 for 4.

West Michigan manager James Russell praised his team's "energy."
