South Bend Breaks Through for First Win in Round 1; Now Trails 2-1
The South Bend Cubs have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading West Michigan Whitecaps, winning, 9-3, at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium. Cubs right fielder Greg Smith was 2-3 with a triple, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs. The win cuts the deficit facing the Cubs to 2-1 in the best-of-5 Round 1.

Phil Lind hit a 2-run double off Dave Johnson in the bottom of the fifth, which put the Cubs in front, 4-2. In addition to the double, Lind had 1 single and 1 walk, while going 2 for 4.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Smith.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium in South Bend.
