"Kirk was just locating so well and using his pitches," Washington manager Mark Grudzielanek said later. "He wasn't leaving anything over the plate."

Griffith recorded 3 strikeouts and no walks in a strong outing.

"When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game," Boston manager Alvin Morman said in postgame comments to BNN. "We couldn't get a key hit off him."

Griffith has fashioned a 9-3 mark for the season, 3.20 ERA and thrown 112.1 innings in 19 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .237 against him.
