Fans of the Norfolk Tides who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Norfolk win over the visiting Gwinnett Hammers, 1-0, in 11 innings. Al Rucker started for the home team against Jeff Reid. Jeff Reid earned accolades for his performance.

The Tides got a clutch hit from catcher Juan Madrid. In the bottom of the 11th, he delivered a run-scoring single to win the game for the Tides.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Norfolk skipper Charlie Poe.
