Charlotte pitcher Dave Smiley had a large part in his team beating the Syracuse Chiefs, 5-2. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. The winning pitcher was Smiley, now 6-7. He tossed 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 7. Ed McDermott recorded the save for Charlotte, his 6th of the season.

Had Felix Mercedes not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Mercedes hit a 2-run single. That made the score 4-2, in favor of the Knights.

Mercedes told a Charlotte Daily reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.
