Red-Hot Johnson Cools Off Lehigh Valley
Pierce Johnson of the Buffalo Bisons was on top of his game.

The 34-year-old tantalized the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 7-0.

"He had the changeup working," Lehigh Valley manager Mel Pritchard said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Buffalo hurler had 4 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 8 hits in his complete-game effort.

Johnson told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

In 24 starts this season, Johnson has notched a 9-9 record and a 2.80 ERA.
