The Chicago Cubs opened their 2026 season with a disappointing 8-1 loss to the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field. First Baseman Nick Castellanos was a big part of the win for Washington. He was 2-4 with a home run and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Joey Gatto picked up the win, improving his season record to 1-0. He struck out 4 in 6.1 innings.

With Washington leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Castellanos hit a run-scoring single off Chicago hurler Jim Kemp. It was the 2nd hit of the season for Castellanos and put his team ahead, 2-0.

"It doesn't matter if you're 10 games over .500 or 10 games under, it feels good to win," Castellanos told the Washington News.
