Bakersfield got a decent performance from pitcher Mike Briddon, but it wasn't enough to beat the San Jose Giants. San Jose won the San Jose Municipal Stadium contest, 5-1. Briddon threw 6.1 innings allowing 5 runs for the losing team. Walt Hutchinson notched the win in relief. The left-hander allowed no runs on 3 hits in 3.2 innings. His record now sits at 1-0. Hal Powell earned the save for San Jose, his 7th.

Hugh Rutherford had a big 2-run home run for the Giants in the bottom of the sixth inning. With San Jose leading 2-1 and a runner on 1st, he sized up a cutter from Mike Briddon, who leads the CAL in quality starts with 5, and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the Giants on top, 4-1.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Rutherford, "one at-bat at a time."

San Jose raised its record to 18-17 with the win.
