The High Desert Mavericks got a sterling performance from pitcher Steve Hankins, but the Modesto Nuts still prevailed, 5-3. Hankins threw 6.1 innings of 5-hit ball. Eric White notched the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. His record now sits at 4-2. Kel Clark nailed down his 16th save.

The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Bob Edmonds came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing High Desert pitcher Joe Hicks, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Modesto on top, 4-3.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Edmonds.

At 29-22, the Nuts are currently first in the North Division.
