The Salem Red Sox had to overcome a good performance from Winston-Salem pitcher Erik Jerningham to claim a 2-0 win at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Jerningham went 6 innings and allowed 1 run. Ben Ballard picked up the win with 6 innings of work. He allowed no runs on 7 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 4. On the season, he is now 6-11. The defeat makes Winston-Salem 60-50.
The game was on the line with two out in the top of the eighth inning, but Cedric Callahan didn't flinch. With the bases loaded and Winston-Salem trailing 2-0, Callahan retired Manny Nájera to end the threat. "Nothing to it," said Callahan, with a wink.
