The Myrtle Beach Pelicans rode a solid performance from 22-year-old starting pitcher Alec Weber to a win, beating the Winston-Salem Dash, 6-2, at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Weber, the winner, moves to 2-1. He threw 5.2 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 4 walks. Dan Newman, credited with the save, is now 3 for 4 in save opportunities.
Jeff Kilkenny had a big 2-run double for the Pelicans in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Myrtle Beach leading 3-1 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a fastball from 23-year old right-handed pitcher Erik Jerningham and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 8th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Pelicans ahead, 5-1.
"I was trying to do what I do, go out there and compete," said Weber.
The Pelicans improved to 60-62.
