The South Bend Cubs defeated the Great Lakes Loons, 6-5, in part because of third baseman Doug McGillivantic. McGillivantic was 3 for 4 with a triple, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 for the Cubs. The win was credited to Sergio Acosta in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Mike LeBlanc took the loss. Great Lakes is 4-5 after the defeat.

Had Danny Martin not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Martin hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Cubs.

"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said McGillivantic.
