Visiting Cubs Beat Chiefs, 5-1
|
The South Bend Cubs knocked off the Peoria Chiefs, 5-1, in Midwest League action at Dozer Park. South Bend pitcher and San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic, native José Maréz had an outstanding performance. Maréz, now 3-1, was the winner. In 7 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 4, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. The South Bend win streak is now 3 games.
It could have been a different outcome for South Bend, had it not been for Doug McGillivantic, the 23-year old shortstop . McGillivantic contributed a 2-run triple in the top of the fourth inning to put South Bend up, 3-0.
"It was a tough night at the plate," said Peoria manager Phil Nevin.
