Captains Fall to Cubs, 5-2
|
The South Bend Cubs withstood a fine game by Lake County center fielder Cory MacLean at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium, to upend the Captains, 5-2. MacLean was 2-3 with 2 singles and a walk. South Bend reliever Jesús Hernández picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Jim Cox was tagged with the loss. Mike Tillman recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 11 for 14.
The Cubs got a big at-bat from right fielder Mario Guerra. For the game, Guerra went 1 for 3 with a double and a walk, while adding 2 RBI. In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded, he stroked a 2-run double. His 16th double of the season gave South Bend a 3-2 lead.
Said losing manager Chris Dwyer: "Give the Cubs credit. They played a better game than we did."
This win makes it 5 in a row for South Bend.
