Juan Mercado of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox was on top of his game.

The 25-year-old tantalized the Las Vegas 51s with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 2-0.

"He had the changeup working," Las Vegas manager Nelson Paulino said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Colorado Springs hurler had 5 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Mercado told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This year, Mercado has a 6-8 record with a 5.23 ERA.
