Newton Bashes 5 Base Hits Tuesday, August 11th , 2026 Corpus Christi center fielder Eric Newton had a fantastic day at the plate at Hammons Field, knocking out 5 hits and pacing his club to a win, 16-15. "It was like I was hitting Little League pitching," Newton said after his 5-for-5 performance against the Cardinals. "No offense meant to Springfield, but it was like I was back in little league again -- I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid park, it was Hammons Field." After the game, his manager elaborated on the center fielder's improvements, saying Newton spent the offseason trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball. "That's what I'm trying to do," Newton said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it." Eric Newton doubled in the 2nd, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Steve White in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, singled in the 8th and walked in the 9th. In 78 games this season, Newton is batting .238 with 60 hits and 17 home runs. He has scored 45 runs and driven in 48. View Boxscore |
