Fans of the Savannah Sand Gnats who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Savannah win over the visiting Asheville Tourists, 3-1. Ed Harvey started for the home team against Greg Smith. Ed Harvey earned accolades for his performance.

Savannah got a knockout punch from Steve Rose. The center fielder hammered a 2-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.

Savannah manager Tyler Colvin praised his team's "businesslike approach."
