West Virginia starter Xavier Thompson put a stranglehold on the Rome offense. The left-hander had complete command of his fastball in leading the Power to a 6-1 win. Thompson got the win, improving to 1-1. He gave up 6 hits and walked 3 over 9 innings. He allowed 1 run. West Virginia is now 14-15, while Rome is 17-12.

The Power got a big at-bat from third baseman Jimmy Songer. For the game, Songer was 2-4 with a home run and a triple. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the top of the second, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave West Virginia a 3-0 lead.

"We didn't play well enough to win," said Rome skipper Aaron Holbert.
