The Rome Firebirds got a strong 7.1 innings from left-hander Don St. John but failed to take Game 1 of the Round 2 from the Greensboro Grasshoppers. St. John held the Grasshoppers to 3 runs on 7.1 strong innings but Greensboro took the game by a score of 3-2 and now lead the best-of-7 series, 1-0.

The game was at a stalemate until catcher Jim McLaughlin came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Rome pitcher Joe Burton, he hit a first pitch changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Greensboro on top, 3-2.

McLaughlin said afterward that his team has grown over the course of the season, adding: "It feels good when a plan comes together."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro.
