Fans brought energy and enthusiasm to the Fresno Grizzlies home opener. Phil Perkins started for the home team against José Agodo for the Las Vegas 51s. The Grizzlies were unable to reward the home crowd with a win. The final score was 3-2, Las Vegas, in 10 innings. Phil Perkins, though, was impressive. Mitch Smith earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. He upped his record to 1-0.

The 51s beat the Grizzlies in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Deron Fernández produced in the top of the tenth. Batting against Geoff Johnson, Fernández gave his team the lead, 3-2, when he hit a run-scoring single.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Fernández. "And not try to do too much."
