Starting pitcher Greg Miller pitched well enough to help the Modesto Nuts beat the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, 5-3. Modesto reliever Eric White picked up the win to move to 7-3. Walt West suffered the loss. The third-place Quakes have dropped 5 straight games.

The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Tony Núñez came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Rancho Cucamonga pitcher Max O'Carolan, he hit a 1-1 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Modesto on top, 4-3.

"A confident pitcher is a dangerous thing," said Modesto manager Doug Dascenzo. "That's what Greg is right now."
