Fans of the Daytona Tortugas who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Daytona win over the visiting Clearwater Threshers, 3-1. Doug Hayes started for the home team against Jorge Marrón. Jorge Marrón earned accolades for his performance. Daytona reliever Stan Shaw was the winner. His record is now 1-0. Ken Ross took the loss. António García closed it out for Daytona, earning his 1st save.

Tomás Rodríguez drew 1 walk in his only trip to the plate for Daytona. The 22-year old left fielder had a key at-bat in the bottom of the eighth. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring walk off Ken Ross. It was his 1st walk of the season.

"I was hoping to make good contact," said Rodríguez. "I wasn't trying to knock the snot out of it."
