July's Best Hurler in FSL is Garza

The Florida State League made it official today -- Juan Garza of the Fort Myers Miracle is the Pitcher of the Month. In July he impressed the sportswriters with his domination of league hitters.
Garza made 6 starts, registered 4 wins and 1 loss with a solid 1.08 ERA. In 33.1 innings he allowed 28 hits, racked up 26 strikeouts, walked 13 and permitted teams to hit .219 against him.
This year, Garza has compiled a 6-7 record with a 2.89 ERA in 16 starts.

FSL Batter of the Month Honors to Hawkins

Jim Hawkins is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Clearwater shortstop joined that select company when the Florida State League announced the results of July's voting.
Hawkins totaled 35 hits, 11 walks, 4 home runs, 14 RBIs and 11 runs scored last month to put together a .389 batting average and .466 on-base percentage.
For the season, Hawkins has hit .329 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs. He has played in 90 games and scored 48 times.

Charlotte-Clearwater Brawl, Cabrera and Ortíz Suspended

Cristián Cabrera of Charlotte and José Ortíz of Clearwater were the main participants in a recent bench-clearing brawl and today the league handed out its punishment. Cabrera will have to miss 4 games for his part in the brawl, while Ortíz was given 8 games. League officials announced their suspensions today.
Cabrera is swinging at a .241 pace on the year with 15 home runs, 45 RBIs and 38 runs scored. He has played in 94 games.
In 0 starts this season, Ortíz has rung up a 2-1 record and a 1.23 ERA.
